Managing Weed Seeds in Manure

Weed seeds in manure can be problematic when that manure is spread on a field. High weed pressure reduces yield and in-field management of weeds introduced by manure can be costly. Managing seeds in feed and manure hinges on heat which can be achieved through ensiling feed and/or composting manure. However, we cannot expect a total eradication of weed seeds; there will always be escapes. Regular field scouting is recommended.

Injecting Manure into Cover Crops
Melissa Wilson, Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist Manure Nutrient Management & Water Quality Department of Soil, Water, and Climate – University of Minnesota
Minnesota has a short growing season, so cover crops should be planted in early fall. However, it's recommended to apply manure later in fall once soil temperatures are cool. How can we integrate cover crops with late fall manure application? This presentation covers research evaluating injection of liquid manure into cover crops planted into (or after) sweet corn, soybean, and silage corn.
